We propose a novel design for low-loss wide-angle Y-branch structures, called truncated structural Y branch (TSYB), which is shown to have the lowest loss compared with some other proposed structures under wideangle conditions. The advantage of this design is that it does not require the implementat

Abstract
A low‐loss wide‐angle Y‐junction with graded‐index optical waveguides which can change the optical propagation direction, is proposed. The optical power is divided equally into two branching waveguides with a wide angle. Device performance is examined numerically by the finite‐difference beam propagation method (FDBPM). The simulated results show that the output optical power can be more than 96%, even if a branching angle is as large as 53.1°. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
