## Abstract A low‐loss wide‐angle Y‐junction with graded‐index optical waveguides which can change the optical propagation direction, is proposed. The optical power is divided equally into two branching waveguides with a wide angle. Device performance is examined numerically by the finite‐differenc

✦ Synopsis
We propose a novel design for low-loss wide-angle Y-branch structures, called truncated structural Y branch (TSYB), which is shown to have the lowest loss compared with some other proposed structures under wideangle conditions. The advantage of this design is that it does not require the implementation of any sharp or abrupt feature. 0 1 9 6 John wiley d Sons, Inc.
