✦ Synopsis

Abstract

This article presents the design of a novel ultra‐wideband microstrip‐fed planar monopole antenna with dual band‐notched characteristics. The proposed antenna achieved an impedance bandwidth of 3.1–11.7 GHz with VSWR <2, except the bandwidths of 3.3–4.0 GHz for WiMAX and 5.5–6.3 GHz for WLAN application. By etching a u‐shaped slot in the radiating patch and a u‐shaped defected ground structure in the ground plane, the dual stopbands for WiMAX and WLAN application can be obtained, respectively. The fabricated antenna shows the broadband impedance‐matching, stable gain, good group delay, and near omnidirectional radiation pattern. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
