โœฆ Synopsis

WHEN A Pt electrode is anodized in acid solutions at a potential of about 1500 mV(nhe), molecular oxygen is evolved on the Pt surface, which is covered with a complete monolayer of adsorbed oxygen. l4

This layer is electronically conducting because it does not thicken with continued polarization .l If, now, this system is stirred with H, gas under open circuit conditions, the adsorbed oxygen (Pt-0) layer is stripped off the Pt surface by interaction with H, at a rate which increases with time.4-9

From constant-current stripping studies and from potential-sweep measurements, Breitefl concluded that the Pt-0 layer was removed electrochemically by a local cell mechanismlo after the process had been initiated chemically.

The component reactions of the local cell are the anodic oxidation of H,.

The high-temperature and mediuy-pressure part of the PTdiagram of the system SiOrHxO has been investigated experimentally. The equilibrium diagram is discussed in the light of Schreinemakers general theory of PTdiagrams. The triple invariant point cristobalite + tridymite + quartz lies at 1190ยฐC and
