stove burner) can be attributed to a faulty design that foils the necessary cues. On the other hand, the refrigerator and many other examples suggest that people use complex mental models when reasoning about devices. This view lauds designs that facilitate correspondence between a user's model and the actual state of the device. Norman's attempt to unify these views is reason enough to buy the book, but there is an even simpler reason you should read POET. The book is fun.
Erratum: Note from the Book Review Editor
The book review by D. Jurafsky in Artificial Intelligence 38 (3) contained a misprint. The title "Understanding Natural Language by J. Allen" should have read "Natural Language Understanding by J. Allen." Terry Winograd reminds me that the other title belongs to his 1972 book. He says further that there is an interesting difference in semantics in the two titles, even though they contain the same three words. Unfortunately, the understanding or at least the noticing escaped this editor.
