โฆ Synopsis
In this issue of Human Resource Management, we present three book reviews all focused on the importance of harnessing a firm's human resources (i.e., its people) to leverage higher levels of performance. The authors of the books reviewed are arguably some of the most respected scholars on people management and organizational effectiveness, and we are pleased to provide reviews of their books together in this issue.
The first book reviewed, Treat People Right by Ed Lawler (reviewed by Kuldeep Singh), discusses the importance of virtuous spirals of success that transpire when a firm values and rewards its employees, and in return reaps the benefits of a motivated and committed workforce. Lawler proposes seven principles-attract and retain the right people, hire for fit, invest in career development, design work right, develop and communicate strategic goals, provide a high level of financial returns, and grow and nurture effective leadership. While these principles may not sound particularly novel, the book provides an insightful and a well-written framework reinforcing the importance of "treating people right" in creating a highperformance organization.
