The clarity of the work of DE LANGE (1952, 1958) has opened up many interesting questions regarding the visual process. I have sought answers to a few of them. (Before going on, let me parenthetically second Dr. SPERLING'S suggestion that DE LANGE'S "attenuation characteristics" be called "de Lange characteristics" or perhaps even "de Lange curves"we have been calling them that among ourselves some five years now. Now to go on with the problems we have studied:) Firstly, is there a detectable nonlinear process operating in the perception of flicker, and if there is, what is its nature? The low-pass filter action implied by the de Lange curves must obscure the presence of any nonlinearity. Yet, as VAN DER TWEEL (1961) has pointed out, only the Talbot-Plateau law requires linear low-pass filter action, and that law may be satisfied by only
