Abstract

Experimental data and calibrated simulations for an enhanced wavelength converter based on semiconductor optical amplifiers cross‐gain modulation are presented. Theoretical results for spectral components along the SOA cavity are discussed and a nonhomogeneous bias current injection profile is suggested with an improvement of 4 dB in the XGM wavelength converted eye‐opening. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ## Abstract Semiconductor optical amplifiers of various lengths are characterized in relation to the four‐wave mixing (FWM) properties, followed by the implementation of wavelength converters based on the cross‐gain modulation and FWM. The relative efficiencies of the converters are analyzed and th
