Abstract
Semiconductor optical amplifiers of various lengths are characterized in relation to the four‐wave mixing (FWM) properties, followed by the implementation of wavelength converters based on the cross‐gain modulation and FWM. The relative efficiencies of the converters are analyzed and the comparative eye diagrams are discussed. The measured Q‐factor shows that some of these converters can be used in systems operating up to 10 Gbits/s. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
