Both species are more damaging than oxygen. Chlorine embrittlement is only severe for low test temp. which, most probably, is a consequence of a loss of CI on heating the samples. A Ni-base superalloy, lN738. is severely embrittled after exposure either in elemental S vapor or in a simulated hot corrosion environment The extent of this damage, presumed to be due to the intergranular penetration of S. is far greater than that normally reported based on observations of superficial scales. 13 ref.
