## Abstract The NMR spectrum of phenazine, the tricyclic diazine, oriented in a nematic phase is investigated. The ratios of the interproton distances are determined. They do not deviate significantly from the corresponding values in quinoxaline oriented in a thermotropic solvent.

Solutions of (-)Sa-phenylethanol and benzyl alcohol in MBBA have been studied by IR and CD spectroscopy. From the data, a possible mechanism is deduced by which (-)Sa-phenylethanoi and analogous derivatives induce a right handed cholesteric mesophase in MBBX.
The \*'F nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of trifluoroacetic acid dissolved in a nematic mesophase has been measured as a function of spinning speed. From the spectra of molecules containing one 13C nucleus it is possible to determine the magnitudes of 'J,-F and 'JCF in the nematic phase, and the
Proton NMR spectra of the dicyano benzenes, dissolved in a nematic liquid crystal, have been measured and analysed. Ratios of interproton distances have been determined in each case. Accurate values for the indirect couplings and chemical shifts of ortho and meta dicyano benzene have been obtained i
