The nitroethylation 01 amines is demonstrated to be a general reaction for bases In the pKa range of 2 -8 and that it proceeds tnrough a key intra-molecular mencling step. The reaction, illustrated with aromatic amines, aliphatic orlines and heterocyclic bases, offers inter alla attractive routes to -tiiverse hetcrocyclic systems.
