Acetylcholine (ACh) is synthesized by choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the cytoplasm of cholinergic nerve terminals and transported into synaptic vesicles by vesicular ACh transporter (VAChT). The genes encoding ChAT and VAChT are colocalized within the genome, and their products are known to be
