MN/USA) -Laser surgery to treat vision problems has become an established method. A research team from Mayo Clinic (USA) now presents good news: laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) do not cause long-term changes in the corneal endothelium. ✦ Synopsis
In-vivo skin imaging
Bozeman (MT/USA) -A new prototype of a handheld microscope could help reduce the number of biopsies needed to diagnose skin cancer. Conventional confocal microscopes tend to be bench-top instruments. By using an electromagnetic MEMS scanning bi-axial micromirror, Chris Arrasmith from Montana State University (USA) and his colleagues were able to shrink a laser scanning confocal microscope to a size needed for a handheld device. An 800X6000 (SVGA) resolution at 56 frames per second is provided. A spectrum can be taken from a selected area within the microscope's image. Its chemical signature can reveal whether the cells are cancerous.
