New medical technologies have dramatically changed the range of treatments available to infertile couples (invitro-fertilization, gamete intrafallopian transfer, super ovulation etc) yet the debate continues about what can and should be done in this area. Recent psychological research has focused upon the psychological effects of treatment on couples and their ability to cope with the emotional stress involved in treatment as well as on the effects on the development and well-being of children born as a result of assisted conception treatments. However, with the increasing use of donated gametes and surrogacy arrangements the debate has widened to consider the ensuing challenges to the family unit (involvement of third parties, relationships between family members, issues of openness and secrecy and the rights and needs of children).
