The European Society of Gene Therapy (ESGT) is a professional society dedicated to the development of gene therapy, cell therapy and genetic vaccines (http://www.esgt.org). The mission of ESGT is to promote basic and clinical research in gene therapy, and to foster education and information on the technology of gene transfer and its application to clinical medicine. A crucial part of the ESGT mission is to serve as a professional adviser to the scientific community, governments and regulatory bodies, and the general public in Europe. This position paper is meant to contribute to the social debate on gene therapy and the emerging technology of genetic and molecular medicine.
