โฆ Synopsis
The results of neutron irradiation of 36 patients with uterine sarcoma are presented. Patients were subdivided in 3 groups: A: no residual tumour post-surgery; B: macroscopic tumour ranging from <1 to 11 cm in diameter; C: advanced or metastatic disease. The median survival was 42 months (Group A), 10 months (Group B), and 11 months (Group C). The local control probability at 24 months was 87% (Group A) and 45% (Group B). This difference was not statistically significant. However, 9 of 13 patients in Group B experienced complete remission (69%) and two showed partial remission. Four of them (41%) are free of disease at 11,45, 48, and 55 months. The late morbidity rate was 6%. These data indicate that neutron irradiation is effective in intermediate size uterine sarcoma confined to the pelvis. This open-ended phase II trial will therefore be continued.
