β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Bioassays of factors promoting nerve growth in embryonic ganglia are described. Chick embryo extract evokes fiber outgrowth in both sympathetic and ciliary ganglia explanted into a collagen gel. The response is not suppressed by antibodies directed against mouse nerve growth factor (NGF). Chick embryo extract also supported survival of neurons in both intact and dissociated ganglia. In addition to these nonβNGF activities, preliminary evidence is presented for the release of a NGFβlike factor from cultured iris of the adult chick.

## Abstract We have previously isolated and sequenced the chicken nerve growth factor (NGF) gene and now, from the deduced amino acid sequence, selected and produced peptides suitable for use as antigens. Antisera raised against these peptides inhibit the biological activity of a partially purified
In order to examine the association between adult nerve growth factor (NGF) levels and age-related changes in skeletal and heart muscle mass, we determined NGF concentrations in both tissues. NGF concentrations in rat heart muscle were significantly higher than those in skeletal muscle. NGF concentr
Following a report that nerve growth factor preparations have granulocyte-colony-stimulating activity, we investigated the presence of colony-stimulating factors in 7s mouse submaxillary nerve growth factor and its subunits. Macrophage colonies were formed in mouse bone marrow cultures after exposur
It has been postulated that the aberrant projection of sympathetic axons to individual primary sensory neurons may provide the morphological basis for pain-related behaviors in rat models of chronic pain syndrome. Since nerve growth factor (NGF) can elicit the collateral sprouting of noradrenergic s
