✦ Synopsis

Purpose . The Institute covered the impact on local economies of the (military) Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) . BRAC has created changes in the economies of demographic jurisdictions, which may result in interdependency as one area loses but its neighbors gain . This affects the metropolitan Washington, DC region and has similar impacts across the country . When Congress approved the Commission's recommendations for realignment of a number of U .S . military bases, the migration of jobs caused significant changes to local and state housing, employment, schools, and other elements of the economy . Workforce professionals need to address BRAC's effect on their local communities and learn how to implement meaningful success strategies .

The message is that it is important for all workforce professionals to begin to explore how they can meet the needs of their current and future students, families, and clients involved in this transition .
