## Abstract In this paper the synthesis and some properties of N‐phthaloyl‐L‐serine‐t.butylester are described.
The crystal structure of the title compound, C 15 H 19 NO 3 , shows that the overall molecular conformation, which is approximately planar, is stabilized by intermolecular N-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen-bonding interactions.
Sterically allowed forms of the poly-N-methyl-calanine chain were found by calculation of conformational energies as a function of the rotation angles of its chain bonds. The lowest energy form seems to be a right-handed, approximately threefold helix.
