✦ Synopsis

Mdssbaucr studies on 57Fe isolated in solid ammonia and ammonillxenon mixtures were performed at 4.2 and 77 K. They give direct evidence that atomic iron reacts only with one ammonia molcculc forming FcNH3 which is stable in an ammo& matrix up to 77 K. In addition a compound is formed which is attributed to an iron(II)hexammine.

The MGssbauer spectrum of the [Fe(NR3)6]'+ cation consists of a single narrow line at room temperature \_ This musud effect is attributed to the existence of a dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion which inverts the t2g orb%& very rapidly such that the time-averaged qvdence is zero.
