✦ Synopsis
EuPd 3 S 4 with a NaPt 3 O 4 -type structure was investigated by X-ray di4raction, 151 Eu MoK ssbauer spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and speci5c heat measurements. In this compound, Eu 2؉ and Eu 3؉ ions exist in the ratio of ca. 1:1. The Debye temperatures of Eu 2؉ and Eu 3؉ were determined to be 195 and 220 K, respectively. The isomer shift of Eu 2؉ in this EuPd 3 S 4 at 300 K is largest among Eu 2؉ sul5des because of the compression e4ect of the Eu 2؉ sites. The temperature dependence of the isomer shifts suggests that a hopping of the electron between Eu 2؉ and Eu 3؉ occurs in EuPd 3 S 4 . The Eu 2؉ ion was found to be in the antiferromagnetic state below 3 K from both the magnetic susceptibility and speci5c heat measurements.
