✦ Synopsis

The nature of the chemical bond in mercury(I) iodide has been studied by using the Miissbauer effect in lzrI at 83 K. The sign of the quadrupole coupling constant is negative as expected from the crystal structure, but the unexpectedly small value (-764 hlHz) is explained to be due to then bond character. The relevant bond characters of iodine are discussed, compared with those of the mercury(iI) iodide crystal and its isolated form in dioxane.
