โฆ Synopsis
This is a new edition of this book by one of the masters of chromatography and, as would be expected, it is lucid, easy to read, and very informative. The book is divided into eight chapters. Following a brief historical introductory chapter, the author exposes the problems relating to the reporting of the performance of liquid chromatographic detectors by individual researchers and manufacturers in terms of dynamic range, linear dynamic range, linearity response, noise and sensitivity and extra column dispersion effects of the chromatographic system. Would that all researchers and manufacturers read this chapter in order that we might have consistency and uniformity of reporting. The next two chapters cover bulk property detectors, especially the refractive index, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant detectors and solute property detectors such as the various types of ultraviolet detectors, fluorimetric, transport and electrochemical systems. In addition to these there are discussions on a number of leis well known systems some of which may have a role to play in the future. A chapter on special detector techniques is followed by one which details the use of NMR, MS and IR as detector systems. The penultimate chapter reports on the use of data handling systems for liquid chromatography while the final chapter should be read by all liquid chromatographers since it offers very good advice to the bench worker on the selection of detector systems and optimisation of the performance. Very usefully, each chapter concludes with a summary of its contents.
