โœฆ Synopsis


T fluid consist of lymphocytes and a variety of larger phagocytic cells with markedly different morphoIogic features. Some resemble the monocyte of the peripheral blood, others are large cells with central nuclei which may be synovial lining cells, and some are large macrophages filled with vacuoles and ingested cells or debris. No diagnostic specificity had been attributed to any of these cells until Pekin and his associates reported that large macrophages containing many ingested granulocytes or cell nuclei were a regular morphologic feature of Reiter's syndrome, were encountered in two patients with Gram-negative joint infections, but were rarely seen in other types of synovial in-flammati0n.l Stimulated by this observation, we have reviewed our joint fluid studies for changes in number or morphology of mononuclear cells in different diseases.

Methods

Joint fluids were obtained primarily from the knee. Total cell counts were done using a Coulter Electronic Particle Counter, and a coverslip of
