✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The field of molecular cytogenetics has had a great impact on many aspects of medical and basic sciences. During the past 30 years, the application of molecular cytogenetic methodologies has resulted in remarkable advances in the field of cancer genetics and cytogenetics. These advances have led to the establishment of chromosome patterns as diagnostic and prognostic indexes in an array of acute and chronic leukemias and lymphomas, as key information in BMT, and as guides for the localization of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes that are apparently responsible for the development of neoplastic states. With such information, the physician is in a more favorable position to devise therapy, appraise diagnosis, and plan follow‐up. Β© 2002 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

If a translocation is followed by loss of one of the two derivative chromosomes, the result is an unbalanced translocation, showing monosomy for the segments making up the lost derivative. We have found that in most unbalanced translocations, a third event takes place: a morphologically normal copy

The complex series of DNA repair pathways that are used to repair damage to cellular DNA employ many different proteins. A substantial number of these have second functions. Defects in these multifunctional proteins in man can lead to widely differing clinical phenotypes depending on which of the fu

Two unpublished cases with partial tandem duplication of 12p and one previously published case were studied by fluorescence in situ hybridization using 11 cosmid DNA probes from 12p. We propose that the smallest duplications of 12(p13.2pter) and 12(p13.lp13.33) produce the "trisomy 12p syndrome" whi
