X-ray diffraction studies on a-furil single crystals reveal that the two parts of the molecule are connected with a twofold symmetry axis perpendicular to the C-C single bond connecting the two carbonyl groups. The dihedral angles between the two halves of the molecule and the carbonyllfuran moieties are 46.7" and 2.7", respectively.
