✦ Synopsis

A modification of the adriamycin quantitative assay for DNA is presented which is sensitive to I-20 pg DNA. The assay is simple, rapid, and highly reproducible but, contrary to previous claims, not specific for DNA. RNA interferes with the assay while protein does not. The mechanism and sensitivity of the assay is interpreted with reference to published data on adriamycin DNA binding.

A spectrofluorometric assay for DNA is described. The changes in the fluorescence of adriamycin when it binds to DNA may be quantitated in terms of the amount of DNA present. The assay is specific and reproducible, being free from interference from RNA, protein, and sample turbidity.

## BACKGROUND. Effective noninvasive methods for monitoring patients with bladder carcinoma and screening for bladder carcinoma that show better performance than the methods currently in use would be desirable for detecting urothelial carcinoma at an early, easily treatable stage. A rapidly hydrol
