Modification of 40S ribosomal subunits from Saccharomyces cerevisiae with dimethylmaleic anhydride (DMMA\*), a reagent for protein amino groups, is accompanied by loss of polypeptide-synthesizing activity and by dissociation of proteins from the particles. The protein-deficient ribosomal particles,
