The rate equations for cavity dumping of a laser resonator require definition of the unsaturated gain and a saturation parameter. For a TEM00 lasing mode and arbitrary distribution of inversion power in the laser rod, pump power and circulating power are related by an integral over the rod cross section. optimizing output power.

A second integral is obtained by By linearization at the optimum coupling point, the gain and saturation parameters can be defined in terms of these integrals. Thus the complete system from pump input to pulsed operation can be modelled. This model was used in production of a diode-array-pumped Nd:YAG laser, to define system requirements and to predict performance.
