β¦ Synopsis
An idealized model for certain classes of debris flows and avalanches is developed. Slopes characterized by a steep feeder segment which loads a flatter accumulation segment will be focused on. Such slopes have been observed to exhibit episodic surging motions. The simplified model allows considerable insight into the behavior of such slides. An approximate stability criterion is derived explaining the surging motions. It is shown that, in general, one cannot predict the onset of surging due to the inability to precisely characterize the interaction between the feeder and accumulation slopes. Other results include an approximate analysis for the mean acceleration which may occur during surging.
