โฆ Synopsis
A detailed description of a novel voltage labelling technique for the study of post-source decay of large biomolecules is presented. By introducing a voltage labelling cell within the field-free region of a linear timeof-flight mass spectrometer we have been able to distinguish between intact ions, fragment ions and neutrals. From analysis of the fragmentation events occurring inside the voltage cell, information on fragment masses, energy release and lifetime of the dissociation process can be gained. The post-source decay of negative ions of bovine insulin is used as an example to illustrate the potential of the technique.
