โœฆ Synopsis

The combustion behavior of spheres of a particular petroleum coke that has been widely used for the experimental measurement of combustion rates was modeled in the temperature range 1000-1800 K. In order to validate the model the literature was reviewed and the experimentally determined kinetic behavior established. In the model the intrinsic rate kinetics previously found to apply at low temperatures were assumed to hold at higher temperatures within the whole of the interior of the particle and the diffusion rates for oxygen calculated. Good agreement with measured values of combustion rate over the full temperature range was found using this technique, and the change from Regime I to Regime II behavior was successfully predicted. However, the reaction order and activation energy both varied with temperature so that the conventionally accepted relationships between their values in Regimes I and II did not rigorously hold.
