The paper is the first report on a systematic model study of ductile fracture, which has been initiated by the authors. The models include a matrix subdivided by grain boundaries, and containing hard inclusions. A systematic variational formulation

for the rate problem is presented, and some of the inherent difficulties are discussed and illustrated. The effect of a large elastic compressibility is accurately accounted for. Results are compared with those of previous investigators. Model Studies of Ductile Fracture-I
