โœฆ Synopsis

A novel computational approach for modelling coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) interaction volumes is presented. The model combines the treatment of the CARS signal generation volume given by Teets (Appl Opt. 25, 855 (1986)) with the realistic electric รeld distributions produced by the model of focused laser beams given by Evans and Grey-Morgan (Phys. Med. Biol. 14, 205 (1969)). The new model provides a detailed picture of local contributions to the total CARS signal as well as the CARS spectrum. A particular feature of the model is that it uses readily accessible parameters of the incident beams and the focusing optics. Numerical calculations of CARS signal strength and spatial resolution for a wide range of experimental conditions for the commonly used phasematching geometries, namely, collinear CARS, USED CARS and folded BOXCARS are reported.

## Abstract We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new coherent antiโ€Stokes Raman scattering setting, which relies on a coherent excitation of Raman vibration using a broadband ultrashort laser pulse and signal readโ€out using a conventional continuous wave laser radiation. A simplified setup for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy is introduced, which allows for recording CARS images with 30 cm -1 excitation bandwidth for probing Raman bands between 500 and 900 cm -1 with minimal requirements for alignment. The experimental arrangement is based on
