Composilioit of the wiiiler &&.-During the nutuinii of 1940, d n g e siis mnde under controlled conditions (for dnth to rissist the Nntional Silngc Cnmpnign), by RIr. A. H. Blissctt from n mixture of first-yenr seeds of the following coinposition, sown at the rate of 39.5 Ib. per ncro : 25.3% ench of S 23 pcrenninl rycgmss, Swdish cvccgreen pcreniiinl ryegrass, and smooth mcndow grnss (Poa prateitsis), 7.6% ouch of crested dogstnil, chewing8 fescue, and Agrostis fewis, nnd 1.3% of Kcntish wild ahitc clover.
It was treated with n mixture. of four pnrts of water to one part of molnsses at the rate of 48 lb. of molasses per ton.' After scaling, the coiitcnts of the silo were alloived to rcninin for five months. The coinpleted silnge ans of good feeding quality nnd lmd a rich olive-green colour nud a sweet lnctic odour. In Tnblc I nre given the niinlyses of the hny, grnss, nnd siliige, the Instinamed having been examined nt the top, middle, nnd bottom of the stock. Owing to fermentatioii there is a decrense in cnrbohydrntc in silitgc us eompnrctl with the cnrbo-Iiydmtc content of tlic fresh grnss.
