โœฆ Synopsis

The microstructures of pyrolytic carbon/silicon carbide mixtures codeposited in a bed of fluidized particles have been examined by transmission electron microscopy. In deposits containing about 10 per cent silicon by weight the microstructures are similar to those of pure carbons deposited under similar conditions with the silicon-carbide particles present as small single-crystal particles about 200 A in dia distributed in the spherical carbongrowth features. In deposits cont~ning 16 to 34 weight per cent silicon the silicon-c~bide particles are larger (about 1000 A) and are dist~buted nonuniformly, clustered densely in 1 rem dia regions while adjacent regions contain no silicon-c~bide _ _ particles at all.
