✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The unique properties of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to self‐renew indefinitely or to differentiate to any cell type have great potential for clinical applications in regenerative medicine. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are emerging as important regulators of post‐transcriptional gene expression and have been implicated as crucial elements in regulating ESCs. Here, we review recent progresses in characterizing the role of miRNAs in the maintenance and development of ESCs. J. Cell. Physiol. 218: 251–255, 2009. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

## Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs of approximately 22 nucleotides in length that negatively regulate the post‐transcriptional expression by translational repression and/or destabilization of protein‐coding mRNAs. ## Abstract microRNAs (miRNAs) are an abundant class of endogenous non‐protein‐coding small RNAs, which negatively regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level in many developmental and metabolic processes. miRNAs regulate a variety of biological processes, including developmental timi
