## Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are noncoding RNAs of approximately 22 nucleotides in length that negatively regulate the post‐transcriptional expression by translational repression and/or destabilization of protein‐coding mRNAs. The impact of miRNAs on protein output was recently shown that althoug

✦ Synopsis
Abstract
The unique properties of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to self‐renew indefinitely or to differentiate to any cell type have great potential for clinical applications in regenerative medicine. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are emerging as important regulators of post‐transcriptional gene expression and have been implicated as crucial elements in regulating ESCs. Here, we review recent progresses in characterizing the role of miRNAs in the maintenance and development of ESCs. J. Cell. Physiol. 218: 251–255, 2009. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
