Single crystals of congruent melting hexagonal VB 2 were grown using a triarc furnace applying the Czochralski technique. Orientation dependent microhardness measurements on a single crystal reveal quasi similar hardness in the crystallographic directions 1 100.12 2 and 1 110.02 2 , whereas the 1 11
