โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

In the preparation of methyl methacrylate by the acetone cyanhydrinโ€methacrylamide route, a dimeric ester is formed as a byโ€product, and can be isolated in amounts corresponding to about 1 % theoretical. The acid obtained by saponification of the dimeric ester has been shown to be ฮฑ ฮด;โ€dimethylโ€ฮฑ ฮฒโ€hydromuconic acid. Investigations made at points in the methyl methacrylate synthesis indicate that the dimeric acid is formed (as amide) by dimerisation of methacrylamide under the influence of the sulphuric acid present.

The influence of methacrylic acid (A) dimerization in toluene on its copolymerization with methyl meth.acrylate (B) was studied. It was established that as a result of this influence the dependence of the conAgurationa1 triad mole fraction on the monomer feed is non-linear, r, = 1.05 k 0.03, rs = 0.
