✦ Synopsis

Van der Waals complexes of niobium clusters with argon atoms and iron clusters with krypton atoms have been produced in a supersonic expansion using a laser vaporization cluster source cooled to 77 K. Laser photoionization time-of-flight mass spectra reveal significant nonmonotonic cluster size dependence in the extent of formation for both Nb,Ar, and Fe,Kr species. Photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra have been recorded for selected Nb,Ar, species for n < 20. For a given n, ionization potentials ( IPs) assigned from PIE threshold behavior decrease with increasing m. as predtcted by a simple charge-induced dipole electrostatic model.

The vacuum ultraviolet (~-166 nm) excitation of Xe-CI 2 van der Waals complexes or clusters induces a charge transfer reaction leading to the formation of the XeCI \* exciplex. A selectivity on the final product is observed, the XeCI (B 2E1/2) state being almost exclusively populated when exciting t
