โœฆ Synopsis

Codeposition of silver vapor with E-alkyl iodides at -196'C followed by matrix warmup yields AgI and RfAg. These reactions serve as the first examples of formation of R-M compounds employing the metal atom technique, and of formation of primary RfAg compounds. Matrix dilution experiments indicate, contrary to expected results, that high RfI/Ag ratios favor RfAg formation.

Recent studies indicate that the initial reactions of alkyl halides with sodium naphthalene in IME are best regarded as dissociative electron-transfer reactions, with no significant competition from nucleophilic displacement reactions (Eq. 1) (1,Za). The initially-formed m + :Naph:,Na+ -R\*
