✦ Synopsis

The mesogenic 4, 4Ј-bis[4-(n-octyloxy)benzoyloxy]azobenzene (HL) ligand reacts with [(PhCN) 2 PdCl 2 ] to give the dinuclear cyclometalated complex [(¡-Cl)(L)Pd] 2 (1), from which the mononuclear half-sandwich [(η 5 -C 5 H 5 )(L)Pd] (2) species has been obtained by reaction with Tl(C 5 H 5 ). The Pt II analogue of 2, [(η 5 -C 5 H 5 )(L)Pt] (4), has been prepared in a

In this paper, we show the synthesis of palladium(II) 4,5-phenylimidazole cyclometalated complexes. They have been characterized by IR, 1 H-and 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. The cyclometalated dimer compound 2 [Pd(C 15 H 11 N 2 )(-OAc)] 2 and the cyclometalated monomer compound 5 [PdBr(SEt 2 )(C 15 H 11 N

## 5 . The totally symmetric MH stretches (A 1g ), which are of lower intensity, are shifted by about 50 cm -1 to higher wavenumbers compared with the asymmetric stretches. The results of a group theoretical treatment of the respective site group and unit-cell group modes are given.
