โฆ Synopsis
This boy was referred to Oncology when 2 days old for evaluation of a left upper quadrant mass. He weighed 8 lb 1 I oz at birth, after a full-term gestation complicated only by a borderline high maternal alphafetoprotein. Serial ultrasound examinations during pregnancy were negative for spinal defects. A routine physical examination prior to circumcision when the boy was 1 day old detected a left upper quadrant mass. He had been progressing entirely normally, and evaluation at that time included ultrasonographic examination. This showed a renal mass in the upper pole with dilatation of the collecting system of the lower pole, and a chest X-ray film was normal. There was no family history of renal disease. He was transferred to this institution for further evaluation and therapy. At that time, he was a vigorous and entirely normal 2 day old child with a blood pressure of 101/67. Abdominal examination detected a firm, nontender, 3 X 3 cm round, firm mass in the left upper quadrant. No other abnormalities were detected. Laboratory examinations were within normal limits. Ultrasonography and an excretory urogram were performed.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma, although rare, represents the most common renal neoplasm diagnosed in the early postnatal period ( 1 3 ) . More than 70 cases of this benign tumor have been reported (4); however, there are few descriptions in the radiology literature (5-9). Previous reports have em
