✦ Synopsis

Syntheses, heat treatments, structures and superconducting properties of Hg-based superconducting Cu mixed oxides with the general formula HgBa2Can_lCUnO2n+2+8 are presented and discussed. The increase of the superconducting transition temperature with n occurs up to the third member. The heat-treatment induces distinct changes of T c for different members of the series. Superconductivity in Hg-1212 and Hg-1201 exists in underdoped and overdoped regions. In the structures of Hg-based superconductors the (CuO2) layers have an undistorted ideal arrangement, which could be responsible for the existence of superconductivity at temperatures around 120-135 K.

The metal-insulator transition in a copper-oxide superconductor is discussed. It is shown that at the composition where this occurs at zero temperatures, the number of carriers (bipolarons) varics at \(T\). This gives a tentative explanation of the behavior of the Hall coefficient. Professor Rao's w

Metallic bonding in liquid amalgams is reviewed as well as the use of electrochemical methods, and especially anodic stripping voltammetry (asu) techniques, for the study of intermetallic compounds (IC). The following systems of mixed amalgams are studied electrochemically: Cu-Hg Zn-Hg and Cu-Zn-Hg.
