✦ Synopsis


Metallic bonding in liquid amalgams is reviewed as well as the use of electrochemical methods, and especially anodic stripping voltammetry (asu) techniques, for the study of intermetallic compounds (IC). The following systems of mixed amalgams are studied electrochemically: Cu-Hg Zn-Hg and Cu-Zn-Hg. The formation of a series of 'compounds' is identified and experimental evidence is given for the presence of zinc in several states of aggregation, both in simple and complex amalgams. Some new species, prepared electrochemically, showed marked anticorrosive properties. Voltammetric curves for the anodic stripping of the ZwHg system are computed and compared with experimental results. Enthalpies of formation of zinc amalgams are evaluated from experimental data and known energies of formation.
