Square-summable causal functions can be expressed in a Meixner series. In principle, approximate filter synthesis is thus possible. However, Meixner filters are not realizable since the Meixner functions do not have a rational ztransform. A set of orthononnal functions is constructed with the following properties. Like the Meixner functions, these functions are a generalization of the discrete Laguerre functions and they have a polynomial character as well. In contrast with the Meixner functions, they have the desired property of a rational z-transform.
