Ab~ract: Exploratory photochemical studies with N-phthaloyl derivatives of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, serine, threonine and analogous carboxylic acids and alcohols have been conducted to determine the generality of azomethine ylide forming decarboxylation and retro-aldol fragmentation reactions.
