We ktve used the inelasticelectron-photon coincidence method to measure the radiative lifetimes of the first seven vibrational levels of the A 'l-t state of CO. They were found to decrease to a minimum wlue at V' = 3 before increasing again.

✦ Synopsis
The radiative lifetimes Trad of the CO* (A 'Iii. u' = O-9) states have been dctcrmincd using the CO* (A 'Iii, u'+ X 'Z*, u") "comet tail" emission. The CO* (A 2JIil u') states were populated by 100 CV electrons incident on CO. The lifctimns have been obtained by means of the delayed coincidcncc tcchniquc The trad values range from 3.82(*0.2) X 10" sforu'=Oto2.11(~0.1)X 104 s for v' = 9 and lead to the conclusion that the electronic transition moment for the CO* (A 'Ilid X2x? system is indcpcndcnt of u'. In the present articlc attention has been paid to the influcncc 0: positive space charge on the apparent lifctimcs.
