First cyclotron resonance of electrons in AlAs is presented. The measurements were carried out up to 40T on a high mobility (Jo = 10 500 cm*/V s at 4.2 K) two-dimensional electron gas obtained in a type II heterojunction. The transverse and longitudinal effective masses at the X point of the Brillouin zone deduced from the experiment (m; = 0.44m, and m: = 2.62m,) are in strong disagreement with the commonly used values (m_T = O.l9m,, rnc = l.lm,) [B.
